From the desk of Councillor David Brown
Special Advance Voting Begins on October 1st
Special Advance Voting will take place from Thursday, October 1 to Sunday, October 4, from 10 am to 8 pm. During these four days, eligible electors can vote at any of the 10 Special Advance Voting locations across Ottawa, regardless of where they live. These locations include the CARDELREC Recreation Complex Goulbourn on Shea Road, the Minto Recreation Complex in Barrhaven, and the Greely Community Centre.
Residents who received a Voter Notification Letter are encouraged to bring it with them, although it is not required to vote. Electors must provide identification showing their name and qualifying Ottawa address, but photo identification is not required. Residents who need to add their name to the Voters’ List or update their information can also do so at the voting place.
If you are unable to vote during Special Advance Voting, Advance Voting Day is Friday, October 16, followed by Voting Day on Monday, October 26. On those days, residents must vote at their assigned voting location.
You can find your voting location, review acceptable identification and learn more about voting options through ottawa.ca/vote.
Ward Updates
Free Accessibility Ramp Pilot for Ottawa Businesses
The City’s Corporate Accessibility Office, in partnership with the StopGap Foundation, is offering free temporary accessibility ramps to eligible Ottawa businesses. The ramps are designed to help address single step entrances that can create barriers for residents who use mobility devices, have limited mobility or use strollers.
Businesses must be located in Ottawa, have a suitable single step entrance, have enough space to safely use the ramp and meet the program’s insurance and participation requirements. Businesses operating from leased properties will also require approval from the property owner.
Applications are now open. Funding is limited and eligible businesses will be selected on a first come, first served basis, subject to review by the Corporate Accessibility Office.
Local businesses interested in participating can learn more and apply through the City’s accessibility program webpage.
Commemorative Naming Applications Now Open
The City of Ottawa is now accepting fall applications for its Commemorative Naming Program, and I encourage residents and community organizations to consider the people, histories and legacies that have helped shape their communities.
Applications are being accepted until October 20, 2026. Through the program, residents can submit nominations for the commemorative naming of eligible municipal assets, including streets, parks, facilities and indoor or outdoor amenities.
Nominations are reviewed against the City’s established commemorative naming criteria. Approved applications then proceed through a 30 day public consultation before a final decision is made through the appropriate City process.
The next application period will take place from March 2 to April 13, 2027. Residents interested in submitting a nomination can find additional information through the City’s Commemorative Naming Program.
Update on Excess Soil Activity at 6314 Flewellyn Road
I want to provide residents with some context regarding the ongoing soil hauling and land activity at 6314 Flewellyn Road, near the intersection of Flewellyn and Huntley roads.
The excess soil being brought to the property is coming from construction of the new Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus on Carling Avenue. The Flewellyn Road property is zoned Mineral Extraction, which permits its use as an excess soil reuse site. A fill management plan has also been prepared and registered through Ontario’s Excess Soil Registry under Notice ID N00003213.
Based on the information provided to our office, the final deposits of excess soil are expected to take place by the end of 2026. The land clearing occurring on the property is associated with this permitted use.
Since the property already had the required zoning permissions for this activity, no additional municipal licensing was required for the site to receive the excess soil.
I will continue to share information with residents as appropriate if there are any significant changes to the activity taking place at the site.
