From the desk of Councillor David Brown

Happy Thanksgiving from Ward 21

As Thanksgiving weekend approaches, I want to wish everyone across Ward 21 a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Whether you are gathering around the table with loved ones, travelling to visit family, or simply enjoying a quiet long weekend, I hope you have the chance to relax and enjoy the season.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the residents of Rideau Jock and for the many conversations, community events, and connections I have shared with residents throughout the year.

From my family to yours, I wish you a safe, happy, and relaxing Thanksgiving weekend. I hope it is filled with good food, good company, and plenty to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ward Updates

Thanksgiving Week: Garbage and Recycling

There will be no curbside garbage, green bin, recycling or bulky item collection on Thanksgiving Monday, October 12. Collection for the rest of the week will be delayed by one day.

Most curbside homes in Rideau-Jock are on a Friday collection schedule, so those pickups will move to Saturday, October 17. Please set out your bins at your usual time on your delayed collection day and keep them at the curb until they are emptied.

E-Scooter/Bike Info Session

The Manotick Village & Community Association is hosting an informative Community Discussion Forum on safe and responsible e-scooter/bike use, local regulations, and road safety in our villages.

Whether you ride, walk, drive, or are a parent of youth who uses e-scooters, this session is for you.

The session is taking place on Thursday, October 15 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at the Manotick Community Centre (5572 Doctor Leach Drive). All residents are welcome. Come share your questions, learn about rules, and help keep our community safe for everyone!

Fire Prevention Week: Lithium Battery Safety

This week is Fire Prevention Week, and the focus is on lithium-ion batteries. They power phones, laptops, cordless tools, e-bikes, and many other rechargeable devices found in our homes. Fire departments across the country are warning that fires started by these batteries are growing quickly. They burn hot and fast, can be very hard to put out, and can reignite hours or even days later.

A few steps to cut the risk:

  • Buy certified. Look for a CSA, cUL or CETL label. Cheaper batteries without certification may lack safety features.

  • Don't modify batteries to charge faster or hold more.

  • Charge safely. Use the charger made for that device, charge on a hard surface away from anything combustible, and unplug once it's fully charged.

  • Watch for warning signs. A battery that swells, hisses or smells unusual should be taken out of use.

  • Recycle properly. Never put batteries in the garbage or regular recycling. Take them to a battery drop-off site and tape over the terminals first. Damaged batteries need a special container at select drop-off sites.

To find a drop-off location, use the City's Waste Explorer at ottawa.ca/wasteexplorer. For fire safety questions, please visit Ottawa Fire Services’ Fire safety, prevention and education page for more information on protecting your home from fire.

Fall is full of opportunities to reduce waste across Ottawa! Attend the Circular Fair where you can bring a broken item to the Repair Cafe or find a new-to-you outfit at the Clothing Drop and Swap, learn tips to prevent food waste, or find a treasure at Giveaway Weekend.

These events make it easy to keep useful items out of the landfill, save money, learn new skills, and connect with your community.

Find upcoming events and details at ottawa.ca/wastereduction. New events are added regularly, so be sure to check back often.

Out & About

What an incredibly moving day in Manotick. I was honoured to participate in the Royal Canadian Legion 100th Anniversary Pipes and Drums Tribute Parade Saturday, September 26. Over 200 musicians marched in honour of our fallen soldiers. Following the parade, I attended a deeply meaningful ceremony rededicating the Cenotaph and recognizing the 17 fallen soldiers from both the First and Second World Wars.

I had a lovely time joining everyone at the Rural Ottawa South Support Services Afternoon Tea Sunday, September 27 at Orchard View Wedding and Events Centre.

It was wonderful to catch up with so many community members, enjoy the live music, and support such a fantastic local organization. Thank you to everyone who made the afternoon so special.
