Post-Storm Waste & Clean-Up Information (July 1 Storm)
First posted July 4, 2026; updated July 5, 2026
⚠️ Major Update: Landfill disposal fees are now waived (free) at the Trail Waste Facility for residents with an active storm-related service request, and residents may now place extra bags of spoiled food beside their green bin if they are clearly labeled "Green Bin".
To support residents affected by flooding and power outages from the July 1 storm, the City of Ottawa has implemented temporary measures to help manage extra storm-related waste.
Curbside Collection Rules
No Item Limits: Impacted residents may place eligible storm-related materials at the curb without following the standard three-item garbage limit.
Be Patient with Pickup: Depending on available resources, storm waste might be picked up with your regular garbage or by a separate, dedicated storm collection truck later in the day or week. If some of your waste is left behind, please leave it at the curb. Additional collection passes are continuing in affected communities—do not file a 311 service request.
Regular Services: Regular weekly collection services continue as normal alongside these temporary measures.
What is Eligible for Curbside Pickup?
Household Items: Flood-damaged household contents, furnishings, and general clean-up garbage.
Spoiled Food & Extra Green Bin Capacity: Organic material and spoiled food resulting from extended power outages can go in your green bin (collected weekly with no limit). Temporary Measure: If you have more spoiled food than will fit, you may place additional garbage bags beside your green bin. Each extra bag must be clearly labeled "Green Bin" to be collected with your weekly organic pickup.
Construction & Demolition Material (Limit of 2 Cans): You may set out up to two (2) garbage cans of drywall, flooring, or other construction debris. Materials must be in a container with a removable lid, a maximum capacity of 140 litres, and weigh less than 15 kg (33 lbs) per container. Note: If you have more than two cans, you must work with your insurance provider/contractor or bring it to the landfill.
Carpet & Flooring: Textile floor coverings (carpet, underpad, rugs) must be securely tied into compact bundles no larger than 1.2 metres (4 feet) long and 0.6 metres (2 feet) wide/high. Maximum weight is 15 kg (33 lbs) per bundle.
Leaf & Yard Waste: Unlimited leaf and yard waste can be set out in paper bags or reusable containers labeled "Leaf and Yard Waste." Branches must be bundled with biodegradable string, max 1.2 metres (4 feet) long and 60 cm (2 feet) wide, with individual branches under 7 cm (3 inches) in diameter. Logs, stumps, soil, rocks, and sod will not be collected.
