Project update: Greenbank Road Realignment and Southwest Transitway Extension Contract No. CP000521
Map showing the proposed Greenbank Road Extension highlighted in blue, including its connection to existing roads and nearby neighbourhood streets.
The City is undertaking the design and construction of a new 4-lane arterial roadway with 2-lane segregated median Bus Rapid Transit along the realigned Greenbank Road corridor. This project includes a new bridge over the Jock River, segregated cycling/pedestrian facilities, construction of 20 new protected intersections, a new Park and Ride facility, and new watermains and sewers. This project will provide a key transportation link for the fast-growing community of Barrhaven South.
The project limits extend from Marketplace Avenue to Barnsdale Road. The project is planned to be delivered in 3 Phases as described below.
Phase 1, extending from Riverboat Heights to 200 metres south of Cambrian Road, began construction in spring 2026 and is expected to be completed by fall 2028.
Phase 2, between Marketplace Avenue and Riverboat Heights, is scheduled to begin construction in spring 2027. Detailed design will be completed in December 2026.
Phase 3, extending from 200 metres south of Cambrian Road to Barnsdale Road, remains in the planning stage. Detailed design is expected to be completed by December 2027, with construction anticipated in 2029 or 2030.
This phased approach will support the long-term improvement of the Greenbank Road corridor while allowing construction to be completed in stages.

Advanced hydro relocation
Hydro Ottawa, in conjunction with the City of Ottawa, will be completing advanced relocation of hydro infrastructure associated with Phase 2 limits along Greenbank Road between Marketplace Avenue and the Jock River. Some short-duration lane reductions on Greenbank Road may be required.
The utility work is expected to begin in January 2027 with completion by summer 2027. The purpose of this work is to relocate both underground and aerial utilities in support of Phase 2 of the Greenbank Realignment Project, scheduled to begin construction in spring 2027.
Traffic impacts
Construction operations for Phase 1 between Cambrian Road and Riverboat Heights will continue through to fall 2028. This will include short duration lane reductions during off peak hours along Cambrian Road, Watercolours Way, River Run Avenue and Riverboat Heights. Full road closures (not concurrently) up to 1 week in duration will also be required on Cambrian Road, Watercolours Way, River Run Avenue and Riverboat Heights to facilitate the construction of new intersections.
To accommodate the installation of the power lines, Hydro Ottawa may need to implement temporary lane reductions on Greenbank Road during off peak hours.
