Canada Day Storms – One Week After

One-week ago today, on July 1 (Canada Day) the City of Ottawa took a direct hit by a series of strong thunderstorms resulting in high winds causing varying degrees of damage and dumping 118mm of rain yielding a number of flooding issues to both public and private properties. This cancelled festivities across town and left basements across the City with water damage.

Report Basement Flooding

If you have not done so already, please report basement flooding using the online form: https://311.ottawa.ca/en/3-1-1/service/?id=b699c34d-7cd7-ec11-a7b5-0022486dcdaf. All online submissions will be answered.

Storm-related waste

Any resident that has been impacted by flooding will receive additional collection for eligible storm related debris.  If you have not done so already, please create a service request through Ottawa.ca or by calling 311 once storm debris is placed at the curb.  This identifies the location for collection. Green bin and regular garbage should be placed at the curb on their regular collection day.

Note: If you have already submitted a service request related to basement flooding, you do not need to submit a new request for storm-related waste collection. For those who haven’t submitted a service request for basement flooding, follow these steps for additional storm waste pick up:

  1. Place eligible materials at the curb.

  2. Submit a service request at Ottawa.ca.

  3. Select "Storm related waste" from the drop-down menu.

Residents may set out up to two containers of construction and demolition material for storm-related waste collection. Construction and demolition debris exceeding two containers will not be collected. Containers must be prepared and set out according to regular collection guidelines, including:

  • Have a maximum capacity of 140 litres

  • Weigh 15 kg (33 lb) or less

  • Have a removable lid.

Textile floor coverings such as carpet, underpad and area rugs must be securely tied into bundles no larger than:

  • 1.2 metres (4 feet) long

  • 0.6 metres (2 feet) wide

  • 0.6 metres (2 feet) high

  • 15 kilograms (33 pounds) in weight

These items are collected separately and can be set out in addition to the two-container construction waste limit.

For larger quantities of construction and demolition debris, residents will need to work through their insurance and/or a contractor. Residents whose properties were affected by the storm and who have submitted a City service request for a flooded basement or storm-related waste may dispose of eligible storm-damaged materials at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill free of charge. This exemption applies only to materials resulting from storm-related damage and is available only to residents with a submitted service request.

Household hazardous waste is not accepted through any curbside collection and should be safely stored until it can be disposed of through the City's Household Hazardous Waste program.

Saturday, July 25
Kanata Research Park
‍ ‍373 Leggett Drive
8 am to 4 pm

Electronic waste (e-waste) is not accepted for curbside garbage collection. Much of this waste consists of steel, glass, copper, aluminum, plastics and precious metals that can be recycled and reused.

Food Waste and Green Bin
Residents are encouraged to continue using their green bin to dispose of spoiled food and other organic waste resulting from extended power outages.

  • Green bin service occurs weekly on your regular collection day.

  • There is no limit to the amount of organic waste that can be set out.

As temporary measure and in support of storm waste collection, if you have more food waste material than will fit in your green bin, you can place additional garbage bags beside it.

  • Clearly label each bag "Green Bin."

  • These materials will be collected with your regularly scheduled pickup.

Using the green bin whenever possible helps support efficient waste collection and cleanup efforts across the city.

The City is exploring additional opportunities to increase collection capacity and complete cleanup efforts as quickly as possible. This includes deploying additional collection vehicles, extending operating hours, and reallocating resources from other service areas. We appreciate your patience and understanding as these efforts continue.‍‍ ‍
