Join local historian Bob Moore for a walking tour of The Historic Richmond Rifle Range
and Lyon Jock River Dam !!
The Lord Strathcona Rifle Association (LSRA) was a group of local residents of Richmond who established this rifle range and regularly trained there as a local militia. The patron and sponsor of the Rifle Association was Sir Donald Smith, also known as Lord Strathcona, who was the co-founder of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) among many other accomplishments in his business and political career. This Rifle Range in Richmond was used by over 160 local residents to train for military service, if needed. Some members of the Lord Strathcona Rifle Association did serve Canada in the Second Boer War and in the First World War.
The Lyon Dam on the Jock River was built by Captain George Lyon - an original settler of Richmond who was an officer in and veteran of the War of 1812. He built this dam to power his sawmill and grist mill. He became a successful local businessman and a community leader in his life and career.
